KIB's 7th International Quiz - 15 mei 2008

The KIB is proud to present its 7th anual International Quiz. This will take place the 15th of may ,20h at Pangea. Questions will be in English and will cover a wide range of topics,such as music,culture,sports,politics,general knowledge etc. Don't worry if you're not a professional quizer: the questions are specially made for international students and are certainly not that hard.

The quiz will be played in teams of 5 persons. To subscribe your team,just send an e-mail to mauritsvdr@gmail.com with the names and nationalities. If you're less than five persons you can also subscribe and we'll fix a team for you. The subscription fee is only 5 euro per team (1 euro per person).

Places are limited so don't hesitate!

KIB Cocktail Party - 24 april 2008

Biofuel: a bless or a curse? - 17 april 2008

In the heated debate on climate change, biofuel is often named as one of the ways to save the planet, providing an easy way to make engines run without having massive amounts of carbondioxide fillilng our lungs and our atmosphere. But how much of this good-news-story is actually true? Are biofuels really the ultimate solution for a problem that makes us all restless about the future, or do they come with a price as well, perhaps even a price that is not worth paying? On April 17th, two renowned specialists in the field face each other in a debate concerning the truth on biofuel. Luc Pelkmans (Flemish Institute for Technological Research, specialised in Energy technology) and Bart Muys (Forest Ecology and Management Research Group, KULeuven) will try to distinguish reality from policy and give much-needed answers to all possible questions.

Kyoto: dream or reality? - 16 april 2008

In this debate the feasibility of the Kyoto norms will be discussed. The goal for the European Union is to reduce the expulsion of hothouse gases with 8% between 2008 and 2012. The European Emission Trading Scheme (ETS), a market mechanism that, together with the Joint Implementation (JI) and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), has been implemented to live up to the agreements of the Kyoto-protocol, now goes into a second phase after an experimental period. Therefore it is time for an evaluation.

The participants of the debate are Prof. Aviel Verbruggen (Professor at the University of Antwerp, Environment and Technology Management Department; member of IPCC), Mr. Bram Claeys (Bond Beter Leefmilieu; Klimaatcoalitie), Mr. Tomas Wyns (EU ETS policy officer of Climate Action Network Europe) and Mr. Tomas Velghe (Environment, Nature and Energy Department of the Flemish Government). The debate will be moderated by Prof. Hans Bruyninckx (Institute for International and European Policy, KULeuven).

Nato visit - 19 maart 2008

On March 19th we will pay a visit to NATO. The trip will include the political HQ in Evere (Brussel) in the morning and the military HQ (SHAPE) in Mons in the afternoon. You can register for the trip at Pangaea on February 14th, February 27th or March 4th, between 2 and 4 p.m. Price: 5 euro for KIB members, 10 euro for others (bus rides to and from NATO included). Be sure you bring your identity card/passport along for signing up, as we have to send your passport/identity card number (along with your birthdate) to NATO.

Taiwan's International Environment & Relations with China - 13 maart 2008

On March 22, Taiwan faces presidential elections. In the parliamentary elections of January, the Kuomingtang drove the ruling Democratic Progressive Party of president Chen from power. Will the outcome of the presidential elections be the same? What is at stake? How about the policy towards mainland China? These and many other questions will be answered on March 13. The de facto ambassador of Taiwan, representative Dr. Michael Kau Ying- Mao will address Leuven students, academics and everyone who is interested. He is accompanied by Dr. Peter Chang Wu-Shou, health division director of the Taipei Representative Office in the EU and Belgium, who will answer questions about Taiwan and the World Health Organization. Indeed, Taiwan is striving to become a member of international organizations, such as the UN and the World Health Organization. Don't miss out on this opportunity to get to know the country, a full pledged democracy that is still considered by mainland China as a rebellious province.

Afterwards, the Information Division of the Taipei Representative Office hosts a reception with pictures from Taiwan.

Studentendebat: Free trade: a blessing or a curse? - 6 maart 2008

Recente data spreken van 800 miljoen mensen die ondervoed zijn of zelfs honger lijden, een vierde van de wereldbevolking overleeft op minder dan 1 dollar per dag en daarbovenop hebben we problemen met vervuild drinkwater, geneesbare ziekten die dodelijk blijken enz. Op de Millenium summit in 2000 hebben 189 wereldleiders een belofte gedaan die beter bekend staat als de Millenium development goals. De Millenium goals spreken duidelijke taal zoals de belofte het percentage mensen in absolute armoede te halveren. Over de jaren heen hebben staten een consensus bereikt over een variëteit aan methoden bij de bestrijding van armoede. Vrijhandelsakkoorden zijn zonder enige twijfel hiervan de meest omstreden.
Grote economische blokken zoals de VS, de Europese Unie maar ook landen zoals Japan en Canada promoten vrijhandel als de ultieme brandstof achter economische groei en is dus een voorwaarde voor de ontwikkeling van derdewereldlanden en het bestrijden van armoede. Vele NGO’s gaan echter niet akkoord met die stelling en stellen dat dergelijke akkoorden meer goed dan kwaad doen met als recentste wapenfeit de strijd tegen de Europese partnership akkoorden (EPA’s) hierin ook gesteund door de ontwikkelingslanden zelf. Op donderdag 6 maart organiseert de Kring voor Internationale Betrekkingen een debat voor en door studenten over deze brandend actuele kwestie.

Europa debat - 13 februari 2008

KIB organiseert in samenwerking met Aegee Leuven en CDS Leuven een 'Europa debat', waarbij de focus gelegd wordt op het 'Europa van de regio's'. De Europese Unie zoals we ze kennen is de voorbije jaren ingrijpend veranderd, onder meer met een grote uitbreiding naar het oosten. Hierbij steekt een karakteristiek de kop op: de ontplooiing van de regio's ten nadele van de natiestaat. Europarlementsleden van verscheidene Vlaamse partijen zullen hierover debatteren met elkaar en het publiek. KIB nodigt u van harte uit op deze gezamenlijke activiteit van enkele Leuvense vrije studentenverenigingen. Het debat zal in het Nederlands verlopen.

KIB's Super Tuesday - 12 februari 2008

2008: election year in the remaining super power. The choices of the American electorate affect the entire world. For that reason, KIB wishes to inform all of you about the outcome of the primaries on our "Super Tuesday". Professor American policy studies Bart Kerremans (KUL) will, in his very own style, both analyze the results of the past primaries with their possible outcomes and provide an insight in the American election system.

Crimes against humanity - 4 december 2007

With the creation of the International Criminal Court, crimes against humanity can finally be really punished. These crimes are still being committed on a daily basis (consider Darfur, Congo and many more, less well known conflicts). Therefore, it is important the international community takes its responsibility. Cedric Ryngaert, professor and member of the Institute for International Law at the KULeuven, comes to talk to us about the recent developments in this area.

Groot Rusland Debat - 27 november 2007

Op 27 november vindt een Groot Rusland debat plaats, georganiseerd door de leerstoel Inbev-Baillet Latour in samenwerking met KIB. De Russisch-Europese relaties staan dezer dagen opnieuw in het middelpunt van de belangstelling, mede door de assertieve buitenlandse politiek van de Russische regering. Met presidents- en parlementsverkiezingen voor de deur, bevindt de Russische Federatie zich op een cruciaal punt. Ambassadeur Loekov komt dit toelichten en wordt geconfronteerd met een panel journalisten. Dit debat is een must voor wie zijn blik wel eens naar het oosten richt! Toegang is gratis, de voertaal is Nederlands.

Faces of India - 14 november 2007

India, the upcoming world power is for many of us still a mystery. Next Wednesday, Brigitte Ars, a Dutch journalist who lived in India for many years, will share her experiences with us. As the title suggests, a lot of attention will be paid to the heterogenic character of the country. Indeed, there is more than one India. You are all very welcome to this activity.
